It’s been a minute, a long minute. How you doing? Did you watch the Friends Reunion? I didn’t; it was fun when it was on but I always struggled to understand how a group of people living in New York City but didn’t have any black or brown friends apart from the few episodes when Aisha Tyler joined as Dr Charlie Wheeler, the paleontology professor who first dates Joey and later Ross. Same for Sex and the City, I mean, New York City is possibly the most diversely populated city in the world, it is home to native speakers of more than 800 languages and yet Samantha isn’t shagging someone who lives north of 59th Street?
I have been doing loads and nothing much. I submitted my short story to the Common Anthology (which is published next year) and I did a radio play writing course which was so good. I’ve a draft radio play to work on which I like the challenge of and radio drama’s are a world full of possibilities.
My health hasn’t been great, if you follow me on social media you’ll know all about that and that we’ve adopted a rescue pup, a Boston Terrier, now called Lynda. She’s a character, very stubborn and loves belly rubs more than she loves a squirrel jumping out of a tree.
What I have learned since I last sent out a newsletter is that my capacity for blending work and writing has shrunk. I’ve been working and helping a friend with her project for a while and I’ve nothing left to be creative with. Nothing, nadda, zip. I’m banning myself from doing any extra work, no matter how much I like someone. I need all my brain capacity that is left after doing my job to write and do my own creative projects There are so many projects I want to get on with, and the end of finishing my book is in sniffing distance. I’m sticking with my new trustee roles, Primary Shakespeare Trust and the Diversity and Inclusion Group at The Charleston Trust. That’s it. Nothing else remotely work related outside of my actual job, which I love, is being done ever again. I just want to write and that’s what I’m going to do. When I can give up working to pay my bills I’ll do it in a heartbeat, as much as I love my job I work to live, not live to work. Trust me, I am not that person who would stay working if I won a wad of cash to last me a lifetime. Given that scenario is extremely unlikely, working is what I’ll be doing for a while yet. But I’d love to know, what are this weekends winning lottery numbers?
